Volunteer Position Title: Summer Camp Counselor 2020
 
Volunteer Position Description: Direct and provide hands-on help to campers during activities throughout the camp day schedule.  Keep students focused and involved in their assignments. Accompany students on field trips.
 
Required/ Provided Position Training: Volunteer will receive training on the camp schedule as well as the curriculum. They will be provided with all necessary materials to conduct each assignment.
 
Special skills, interest, or experience preferred: Former or current educators, college students, those with experience in STEM activities, etc. Ability to control their own group of 5 campers as well as maintain a calm energy from all campers throughout the camp week.
 
Volunteer Position Days/ Times: This year’s summer camps are tentatively scheduled as follows:
 
June 1-5 Junior Explorer’s ASTROCAMP Session 1 (2nd-4th graders)
Field Trip to Turtle Cove
June 8-12 Junior Explorer’s ASTROCAMP Session 2 (2nd--4th graders)
Field Trip to Stennis Space Center
 July 13-17 Senior Explorer’s ASTROCAMP Session 1 (5th-7th graders)
Field Trip to Turtle Cove
July 20-24 Senior Explorer’s ASTROCAMP Session 2 (5th-7th graders)
Field Trip to Stennis Space Center
 
Camps are from 9 AM- 4 PM and volunteers should arrive at 8:30 AM
 
Volunteer Position Title: Museum Docent/ Tour Guide
 
Volunteer Position Description: Guide Private Group or Field Trip Tours
 
Required/ Provided Position Training: Volunteer will receive training on giving the museum tour as well as a copy of the outlined agenda.
 
Special skills, interest, or experience preferred: Former or current educators, college students, those interested in history, especially maritime. Ability to speak to large groups and engage visitors, etc
 
Volunteer Position Days/ Times: Field Trips and Private Guided Tours are scheduled in advance Tuesdays- Fridays 9:00 AM- 12:00 PM.

Volunteer Position Title: Field Trip Station Volunteer
 
Volunteer Position Description: The Museum provides field trips for K- 6th graders throughout the year. Each group chooses which “stations” they would like to experience during their time at the museum, and we schedule volunteers according to their requests. Each station takes about 25 minutes and students are placed into groups to rotate through the stations.
 
The stations are as follows:
 
Museum Tour (Maritime history, local culture, and artifacts of the Lower Mississippi River Basin)
Water Safety (Boating Safety 101)
Knots and Lines (Basic knot tying essential to boating security)
Tchefuncte River Lighthouse (Everyday life of the first lighthouse keeper)
LAT & LON (Intro to latitude and longitude including their functions and importance to marine navigation)
Aquatic Robotics Demo (Hands-on operation of ROV models employed by maritime industry)
Treasures of the Tchefuncte Video (Short film that tells the story of south St. Tammany Parish evolution in late 19th century as an international port) (this station conducted by timekeeper-see below)
Boat Building (Tour of boat building class with demonstration of boat building tools and techniques)
Waterway Mapping (Powerpoint presentation depicting the exploration of pirate colonies and waterway mapping in the lower Mississippi Delta and Lake Pontchartrain Basin)
Ring the Bell (Hands on demonstration of how bells are used and end explanation of how this use touches on energy, force, and work)
 
Required/ Provided Position Training: Each station has an outlined description of what it entails and each volunteer interested in participating in that station will receive a copy as well as a walk-through, shadow, and lead of the station before doing it on their own.
 
Special skills, interest, or experience preferred: Current or former: educators, sailors, seamen, boat enthusiasts/builders, college students, wood workers, those interested in history, etc
 
Volunteer Position Days/ Times: Field trips take place Monday-Friday 9 AM- 12 PM. Stations are around 25 minutes long and volunteers will most likely perform their station more than once.
 
 Volunteer Position Title: Field Trip Timekeeper
 
Volunteer Position Description: Keep track of station times during field trips and alert station presenters when there is 5 minutes left until rotation as well as when it is time to switch. They will also direct students in an organized and calm fashion to their next station.
 
Required/ Provided Position Training: Volunteers will learn how to operate the projector and start the video
 
Special skills, interest, or experience preferred: Ability to turn on and start Treasures video as well as keep track of time between stations and alert station presenters.
 
Volunteer Position Days/ Times: Field trips take place Monday-Friday 9 AM- 12 PM. Stations are around 25 minutes long
 
Volunteer Position Title: Gift Shop Worker
 
Volunteer Position Description: Work as cashier in gift shop during normal museum hours when it is open to the general public. Sell museum admissions, check out customer’s items from the gift shop, and record all transactions.
 
Required/ Provided Position Training: Volunteer will learn how to operate the cash register and credit card machine along with plans and procedures of gift shop activity
 
Special skills, interest, or experience preferred: Basic math skills to calculate items tendered.
 
Volunteer Position Days/ Times: The museum gift shop operates Tuesday-Friday from 12 PM- 4 PM, Saturdays from 10 AM- 4 PM and Sundays from 12 PM- 4 PM
